The
Beijing New Music Ensemble (BNME) continues its series at the Ullens
Center for Contemporary Art (UCCA), and at Peng Hao Theater
presenting multimedia concerts in collaboration with Seoul-based
composer Cecilia Kim,
four
guest artists from South Korea,
guzheng player Chang Jing, and flutist Bruce Gremo.
The
concert program at UCCA on November 7 includes two of Kim's works
from a cycle based on real footage of interviews with survivors of
Japanese World War II “Comfort Women” camps. These are performed
by members of BNME, along with the video art of visual designer
Jae-Jean Chung. Another piece, based on Kim's extended stage work
Earth Songs,
brings together a shamanic percussionist (Jong-han Jo) a traditional
pansori
singer (Eun-young Lee), and other members of BNME to evoke a tightly
woven cross-traditional fabric. Finally, a piece highlighting the
gayageum,
alongside a rare collaboration with Chinese guzheng, a close cousin
of the gayageum,
provides a unique glimpse into the Sino-Korean musical relationship.
At
Peng Hao Theater
on
November 8, selections of the above pieces will be repeated,
alongside four extended solos and duets by the traditional
instrumentalists.
