Another piece, based on Kim's extended stage work Earth Songs, brings together a shamanic percussionist (Jong-han Jo) a traditional pansori singer (Eun-young Lee), and other members of BNME to evoke a tightly woven cross-traditional fabric. Finally, a piece highlighting the gayageum, alongside a rare collaboration with Chinese guzheng, a close cousin of the gayageum, provides a unique glimpse into the Sino-Korean musical relationship.

北京新乐团 NAXOS CD 专辑《野草》六月首发!

posted Jun 8, 2009 6:53 PM by Beijing New Music

and Pu Lieping (live calligraphic art improvisation)

Selections from Debut NAXOS CD Presented Alongside Traditional and Electro-acoustic Music, Live Improvisations, and Readings from Lu Xun's Writings

Peng Hao Theater continues to host performances of China's only independent new music group, the Beijing New Music Ensemble (BNME). The next program will be presented on June 15, 2009, in Peng Hao's intimate black-box courtyard theater.

Covering a wide variety of genres, the performances will be dedicated to a singular vision: sharing intimate chamber music in a small, informal setting unlike anywhere else in Beijing. Sometimes the audience will be introduced to older musical classics in a new way.

The program is the second in BNME's June series celebrating its debut CD release on NAXOS records. In two halves, it expresses the musical breadth of the ensemble and guest musicians, covering traditional Chinese music, contemporary compositions, and live improvisations. The first half contains recital pieces from the CD, including special guests Wu Na and Bruce Gremo featured on Zhou Long's piece Su (Tracing Back).

In the second half, Wu Na performs selections from her extensive solo output. Gremo will present a solo work for shakuhachi, with live interactive electronics. Together with members of the ensemble, they will also perform a live improvisation.

Throughout the concert guest hanzi artist Mr. Pu Lieping will explore the correlation between contemporary music and live calligraphic art. The audience will witness the strength with which Mr. Pu’s brush traces out his visual response to the ensemble’s performance. Watching the process of creating a piece of calligraphic art through the flow of music, and viewing of the finished artwork after the performance is over will enable the audience to appreciate these two art forms from a fresh perspective.

Celebrating BNME NAXOS Debut CD WILDGRASS Release

BEIJING NEW MUSIC ENSEMBLE

ANNOUNCES

THE RELEASE OF DEBUT ALBUM WILD GRASS ON THE NAXOS LABEL

JUNE 1, 2009 -- The Beijing New Music Ensemble (BNME), China's only independent group performing contemporary chamber music, announces the release of its first album, on the renowned international label NAXOS. Comprised almost entirely of world premiere recordings, the disc marks a special collaboration with the composers Chen Yi and Zhou Long stretching back nearly three years.

During that time, BNME gave many China and world premieres of those composers' works. Highlights on the album include Taigu Rhyme, Zhou Long's piece for three traditional percussionists and Western chamber instruments, written for a Sino-Japanese reconciliation concert in the United States in 2003. Two pieces reflect the influence of famed 20th century author Lu Xun -- Chen Yi's Monologue (Reflection on the True Story of Ah Q), for solo clarinet, and Zhou Long's Wild Grass, for solo cello and narrator. Zhou Long served as both narrator and studio producer on this album. Also included is Zhou's work from the 1980s, for Western flute and guqin, the latter performed by innovative guest musician Wu Na.

Special concert events will be held in Beijing to celebrate this release on June 13, 14:00 at UCCA and June 15, 20:00 at Peng Hao Theater. The press releases for these events can be found in the following links.
